Perla P. Esquivel is a staff attorney in the Removal Defense Unit. Ms. Esquivel is a first-generation immigrant, born in Uruapan, Michoacan and raised in San Jose, California. Ms. Esquivel joined CHIRLA's legal department as a fellow in 2014. Prior to joining CHIRLA, Ms. Esquivel received her Juris Doctor degree from the UCLA School of Law, where she specialized in Critical Race Studies. While in law school, Ms. Esquivel was active in the Rebellious Lawyering Clinic, where she and her colleagues created a guide for the then-newly-created DACA program. She was also involved in Public Counsel's Asylum Clinic, where she and her colleagues represented asylum seekers seeking refuge. Ms. Esquivel spent her summers at the National Immigration Law Center and at Bay Area Legal Aid. Ms. Esquivel received her Bachelor's Degree in Politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she graduated cum laude.
